CLACKMANNAN - DUNFERMLINE CYCLEWAY

LOCATION

(Click on   to see a map of the start location.)

The old railway line running between Clackmannan, Clackmannanshire and Dunfermline, Fife that has been tarmaced and converted for use as a cyclepath

DISTANCE

One way 20k. The route can be shortened by starting at one of the points where the road crosses the old line.

SURFACE/DESIGNATION

Great surface, some of the best available, except for a short, damp, leafy cutting about halfway between Slack and Dunfermline. It is wide enough for single skating or side by side classic. Mostly flat, with a gentle climb in the middle (railway grade) that can easily be ski-ied up and down.

SAFETY DETAILS

Long straights with no blind corners negates the problems with other users, although I ski there during the week and is usually quite quiet. Enjoy.

FACILITIES

There is good parking at Slack. The turnoff the A907 is unmarked and can be hard to spot.

There is a Cafe popular with cyclists at Forest Mill, that's near the Clackmannan end.

And there is Dunfermline at the other end! The Dumfermline end has a large car park, but the track is narrower for the first 500m or so (Still wide enough to ski).

OTHER DETAILS

The track goes through broad leaf forest and farm land and is very quiet, but opens to the odd view now and again.
If you ski to the car park at Dunfermline, be sure to visit the Thistle Tavern for food and drink. it is nearby, very cheap, welcoming and serves lunches as well as snacks through the day. To get to it from the car park, continue on to the main road, turn left to the traffic lights, then right for about 200 yards. The Tavern is on your right.
